  • A Border Collie is a working dog. They are very smart, so they are easy to train. Border Collies deserve to have a BIG backyard, not be kept inside a house. They need lots of exercise. If you want an inside dog, get a small dog.
  • Please allow me, John's wife, Sharon. The ultimate house dog can be a b.c. They learn with a vengance. Be patient, kind, and remember...you cannot ignore a border collie. they must have playtime. He will eventually have knowledge of many, many words. They don't just respond to the tone of your voice...you have to spell words to keep them from knowing your next move. Use hand signals, and train, train, train. Mine is 5 years with a mentality of a 9 year old child. Be prepared to be herded from the door. He will herd childen instictvly away from the street...anything at all. You will fall in love, I promise.
  • I read two of the other answers before writing this, and I have to say they are both correct. A Border Collie is a wonderful dog, and one of the most intelligent. They are also a WORKING dog in the fullest sense of the term. They are bred to herd, and are usually not happy if they are not allowed to do so. They will herd sheep, cattle, chickens or ducks, or children. They are a high-energy breed with a very high intelligence level, and can be soft-tempered or very stubborn in their desires. They are also people dogs and cannot simply be left alone to fend for themselves. Unless you understand dogs and have a lot of time to devote to them, I'd advise against getting a Border Collie. He'll probably run circles around you. In the right hands, a Border Collie is amazing, but they are not for a novice to keep in the house.
  • well border collies have alot of energie after all there herding dogs even if u dont have a heardin job for them they will run around to drain there energy and they get kind of large, but they love to learn
  • yes they are great dogs i had a half collie half shelty but it was easily one of the better dogs ive owned
  • i found that they are extremely easy to train..well mine was anyways. As long as they have a big backyard..they do enjoy been in your company inside.
  • I say a border collie is not a good House dog at all!!! You should have a huge backyard, and give it lots of exercise or else it will make its own activites. My neighbor has one thats absoltly crazy and makes a game out of everything (even someone using a calculator). My sisters dog is a lab border collie mix and its just CRAZY! just make sure you give it a lot of exercise and activites!
  • I agree with the offerings here. I've always wanted one, but I know I would not have the full amount of time to give such a grand and wonderful dog the level of activity it would thrive best with. They are brilliant and must have structured, acceptable activities to do, or they will create their own and the human half of the partnership may not appreciate THOSE activities. NOT for the first time dog owner! Not for anyone who hasn't the time and space to really support this active breeds NEED for acceptable work behavior.
  • i would go with the sheltie because they are smaller, with a very similar personallity
  • I have a border collie that is 1 year and 9 months and I do not regrect it. I am disabled and my son is hearing impaired, I personally trained him myself without no prior help. A border collie is very smart and is always ready to please. They have lots of enery and very faithful. You will not regrect having a border collie. Mine is both a inside dog and outside (needs room to run.)They are so easy to train. Beware they catch on fast, tho some may say they don't pay attention to the tone of your voice they do.
  • No. Yes.
  • We have a male border collie, and to tell you the truth, he makes a horrible house dog, he had peed and pooped in the house, he sheds like crazy and stinks even after a bath, tons of dirt is always comming off of him from being able to play outside, and he chews anything he can get ahold of. I only recomend this breed if you live on a farm.
  • Only if you have time to give it *at*least* an hour of running exercise outside twice a day -- they are bred for herding sheep in pastures. They'll go crazy if they don't get their exercise.
  • I've had two border collies and both were great in doors. The definitely need their time outside, but with proper training they're great. They are very intelligent and well tempered. Very good family dogs. Both of them were a bit smaller than most border collies though, not sure why that is.
  • they are very easy to train, smart and intelligent, they are an average/ large sized dog, depends on the sizer of house you have, they have long fur as well, and that can be an issue for moulting .
  • i own a border collie and she is superbe, she is very quick and learns just like i want her to... Border collies are great
  • yes they are great, i have one, my grandma's had two. all very well behaved and cute too
  • I have two in house border collies, they are the best! I do have a large yard, and they have a lot of exercise and love to play. If you want a dog that follows you everywhere and becomes a part of you, this is the dog for you. They are hyper, but follow your lead. If you watch TV, they do. If you lay down on the bed, they snuggle up. I work from home and spend all day with my dogs. They herd ducks for play and my children for work (they really are great for kids - they will know if your three year old is trying to open the front door and stop them before you can). I would not recommend this breed for a family that is not at home all day - these are people dogs, and need a human around. If you are at home all day, you will never find a better dog.
  • In can and cant be as well. The key to the BC is that you have to keep them menatlly stimulated. If you dont they will create their own games which will usually be... "not good" for you. They of course would love to be outside a lot but we have 4 of them and one is docile, one is brilliant and the other two want to be herding. If you dont have the time to spend with them then dont get them because they will most likely end up in some pound or shelter when you dont have time to deal with them. I personally think hey are the best dog in the world.
  • I have a two year old border collie mix and he's one of the smartest dogs ever. He housetrained with hardly any effort at all, and learned to sit and stay and roll over and "give hugs" after just a couple positive reinforcements. The only issue may be their energy. My dog LOVES to be outside and if he can't, he goes crazy. If I bring him inside, all he wants to do is go back out! Luckily, I have a fenced-in backyard so he can run around in circles all he wants.
  • If it's only in house with you for a short period of time. A border collie MUST work, do things, have a job, be active, get exercise. IT needs to have it's mind and body busy.
  • right, hears the thing. border collies are NOT house dogs. they need attention, excersize and canstent stimulation, they are a nightmare to train because if they don't respect you they won't listen and, in most cases, there smarter than you so why should they. they are indipendant and restless and aren't good family pets i HAVE a border collie. he's 20 years old and is an amazing dog, but he's only that way because he's NOT a house dog, he's a working dog even to this day. DO NOT GET A COLLIE
  • Very smart dogs and easy to train provided you will give them enough to do. They are sometimes aggressive with other dogs though.
  • Very smart and loyal dogs, all dogs are faily easy to train if you go aboit it right. They need a lot of exercise the love to run
