3/12 means "3 divided by 12" so whip out a calculator. 3/12 is also the same as 1/4 (3 x 1 = 3, 3 x 4 = 12) 5.25

5 is 60/12 (12 divides into 60, 5x)...3/12 in lowest form is 1/4 (12 divides into 3, giving you one-fourth)...to get the entire amount figured, you add the top (60/12 + 3/12 =63/12), then divide 63 divided by 12 = 5.25...always divide the top of the fraction by the bottom to get the decimal equivalent...

I think you divide the top number by the bottom number. In your example divide 3 by 12, so you will have 5 plus .25 i.e. 5,25 I might be wrong!!

You turn a fraction into a decimal using LONG DIVISION. Your example is 3/12. (You might notice that this can be reduced to 1/4, but never mind that). The trick is to keep adding zeros to the numerator: Since 12 won't go into 3, you see if it goes into 30: 12 goes into 30 twice, leaving a remainder of 6: 30/12 = 2 + 6/12. Write down the 2 and keep going... 12 won't go into 6 so you see if it goes into 60: 60/12 = 5 exactly. Write down the 5 after the 2. With no remainder you're done. So the quotient is 25, but when you keep track of the decimal point you actually get 0.25, which is the answer: 3/12 = 0.25 It would be clearer if we weren't stuck with typing text only, but hopefully you get the idea.

I told my son to think of a fraction as a problem or equation, not an 'item' or 'thing'. In your case 3/12 shouldn't be thought of as ''three twelths'', think of it as ''three divided by twelve''. So 1/4 is ''one divided by four''. Did that help yo?...
