Can you think of a "out-side the bag" fuel / gasoline substitute?
(how about a giant wind up spring for an engine, you just have to get out and wind it up every 5 miles or so :+)

I think gyrocopes with an electric starter might work pretty good.

Why not two "wind-up springs"... One is WOUND while the other lets out... You would just need something to smooth the transition as they switch places, or a gearing thing switches springs. ;-)

How about Alka Seltzer in a tank of water? The fizz will propel you for miles and miles! :)
