Here's what I found after a quick search on their site: http://www.watchtower.org/e/200604a/article_01.htm Apparently they believe that he was crucified on a vertical stake because of the meaning of the word that was translated into 'cross' in most modern versions of the bible.

The greek word "stauros" had several meanings; piece of wood, table, wooden spoon and cross(i think there were 9 different meanings). When the scriptures where translated to latin the word crux was used. When translated is a roman torture devise for crucifixion. I believe the Watchtower is the only source that states that the crux was just a verticle stake.

Another example of their confusion created by the doctrines of demons they follow. My 2 cents.

The JWs don't believe Jesus was killed on a cross, they believe it was just a "torture stake." A single upright post. Pastor Jay is right. It has to do with the translation of a word with different meanings. I'm no language scholar so I can't say which one is right.
