  • i've seen it be ruled live cuz it was forced out..
  • It depends on several things. In baseball (with very limited exceptions) the bases are not safety zones. Also, a runner must avoid being hit by a batted ball unless the ball has been deflected by a fielder (including the pitcher) or gone through or by a fielder other than the pitcher. If the ball itself is over fair territory when it hits the runner and the ball has not gone through or by (within a step and a reach of) an infielder and the ball has not been deflected by a fielder, the ball is dead and the runner is out for interference. If the ball has gone through or by an infielder (the third baseman was playing in and the ball went passed him in his immediately vicinity) and no other infielder has an opportunity to make a play or if the ball has been deflected by a fielder, the ball remains live. If the ball itself is over foul territory when it hits the runner (even if the runner's foot or some other body part is over fair territory), it's a foul ball. So assuming the ball was over fair territory when it hit the runner and it had not gone through or by the third baseman, the ball is dead and the runner on third is out. Award the batter first base and advance any runner(s) forced to advance due to the B/R being awarded first base. No runs can score.
