  • In the UK, the police may still press charges even if the person concerned does not want to ( especially in the case of domestic violence ). Not sure if its the same where you are, but I would talk to one just in case.
  • That depends on whether the DA still wants to bring charges against you. It is the DA's choice to prosecute, not your father-in-law's.
  • If you are going to court for anything more than waiving a traffic ticket then you always ALWAYS get a lawyer. To paraphrase a famous quote- Any man who defends himself in court has a fool for a client.
  • if he drops the charges then you probably wont need to go to court... but it also depends on the police and sometimes your district attorney, you might want to talk with your state prosecutor first.
  • Yes. When a charge is filed, it is up to the DA or Prosecutor to decide to drop the charges not the victim. Your relative can plead to drop the charges but it is not his call on whether it is dropped or not. To be safe, get a lawyer.
  • Yes! I went through something similar when I was 19. It's a long story, but the person wanted to drop the charges. The prosecutor went ahead with the case anyway. I was told to plead no contest by a lazy, evil court-appointed "defense attorney". I was going to work in the medical field- but my criminal record prevents me from doing so. I should have hired an attorney! I was not guilty but even if you are, you are going to get screwed by the system if you go to court on your own.
  • u will go thru all the court proceedings thay cannot compell ur father inlaw to go to court do not let him state in court that u hit him.
  • Yes you need a lawyer! This is a criminal matter not a civil matter. Your father-in-law is not pressing the charges the state is. Do not delay. Get an attorney and do it now so that he or she knows all the facts and is ready to represent you in court.
  • i would get one. typically they wont let you drop charges from fights as such. they will for the most part make him keep the charges and youll be in the pokey or anger managment
