  • An engine only needs three things to run, (fuel,spark, and compression). I doubt you have a compression problem. I would check spark first. When the problem presents itself unhook one of the spark plug wires from the plug as soon as it won't restart. Plug in a spark tester that you can purchase from any auto parts store ( just a cheap one). Turn the engine over again and look for a spark on the tester. If no spark it is more than likely an intermittent ignition coil pack failure. If there is spark I would look at the fuel system. When you turn the key forward without starting the engine you should always be able to hear a slight whine momentarily coming from the fuel tank area (fuel pump priming the system). If this is not heard you can verify a fuel problem by buying some carbureator cleaner and spray it down the air filter plenum while someone cranks the engine for you. If it starts or tries to start it is fuel related.
