You pull the rod hopefully at the same time as the fish puts the hook into its mouth.

Some fish, like bass for instance, take bait very lightly and generally you need to "set" the hook with a sharp tug on the line. Catfish, on the other hand, will generally bite and run and it sets pretty well without further pulling from you. It is something you will learn to feel through the rod the more you fish. This is why it is best to use the lightest rods you can get away with as they are more sensitive to light nibbles from the fish. Don't yank too hard though, or you may pull the hook right out. Good luck and happy fishing!!

It just depends on the fish. I love to fish and go quite often. Sometimes the fish puts it there itself. But sometimes the instant you see the bobber move, you have to jerk or the fish is gone!

flyfishing yes this is the case it is precise but all other fishing you can be a little late and still hook up. oh and there is no such thing as a stupid question...just stupid people who dont ask questions

It depends on the hook! there are two basic types. First the typical J-hook, this is your standard hook and is usually set by the fisherman yanking back on the pole. The second is a circle hook. This style is made so it sets itself as the fish swims away, or the fisherman reels the line and the line tightens.Circle hooks are excellent for beginers and fish to be released.(they usualy hook in the corner of the fishes mouth making them easily retrieved)

There is no stupid question, only stupid people, who ask questions which in turn make the questions stupid. So there are no stupid question, as long as they're not asked by stupid people. :)
