Why do vampires drink blood, not some other type of liquid?

Because when the mythology was created that was thought to be the most horrible thing the creature could do -- suck blood. Blood was and is seen as the essence of life, so a creature that taps in to the very essence of life and drains it away is a creature worth fearing. Plus that what other liquids in the body could it have been -- snot? spit?

Because vampires are dead, they have no life of their own. Therefore, they must steal life from the living. In the bible--along with the beliefs of many other religions--blood represents life itself.
