What does the active status next to one of your questions mean? how do you change it?

You can't really change it. The site doesn't allow you to delete/ deactivate your questions. Questions that are not active have been flagged by another user (and approved by an administrator), and the status changes to nonsense, spam/offensive, or duplicate. Then, one of those terms will appear in that box instead of Active.

It means that the question is still available for people to answer and rate. When you join any submissions you make belong to AB. They can only be removed at their discretion Why would you want to deactivate a question. If it is something that you really hate you could write to feedback and ask them if they would remove the question.
