Charcoal, because it's more fun than gas.

Gas is good if you just want to cook your food, but charcoal is the way to go if you want to amuse yourself for a few hours.

People actually invest in charcoal barbecues if they know I'm going to the event, because they know I'll happily take charge of all the cooking. If it's a gas barbecue, I don't bother.
Nobody else seems to enjoy playing with coal barbecues as much as I do, but you should try it.

A word of caution: throwing hot coals into your neighbours extremely overgrown garden to clear it a bit isn't a good idea, trees are prone to being set alight and causing a bigger fire than you or your brother anticipated.

I prefer gas for the convenience and control. To augment the flavor, I have placed pieces of mesquite or readily available flavoring briquets at the bottom of my gas grill.

Any gourmet will say charcoal; there's a relationship in food between quality of food and the magnitude of the hassle required to prepare it. Also, charcoal imparts a nicer flavor than gas.

Charcoal. I also use gas for convenience if I dont have time or Im just plain dont have enough patience to let the charcoal briscuits to get ready for the food. Charcoal is king for steak and burgers though.

OF those two, I'd say charcoal has better flavor unless you add the smoking of hardwoods to your gas grill. But I pr3efer doing the whole thing with strictly wood. We rarely use charcoal anymore. We build a fire with logs and use that.

Charcoal isn't bad though sometimes that tar/chemical taste gets to me. I prefer wood, especially hard woods with flavor, apple is a favorite. Hickory and mesquite isn't bad.

Chaorcal! Gas does not produce the smoke that makes grilled food taste, well, smokey. That being said, chaorcal should not have lighter fluid or "insta-lite" briquettes.
