Try replacing the ac adaptor. Most adaptors have a safety mechanism to help prevent injury in the case of a surge but may sometimes protect the hardware as well.

go buy a new gamecube and go buy a good power bar with surge protection, or a ups!!

Unfortunately, sounds like the console itself may be fried. You may very well be forced to buy a new one, though you could also get a Wii if you can find one in your area. You should probably get a new surge-suppressor power strip as well; as these types of power strips get older, they become less reliable.

Don't worry - the same thing happened to our Nintendo wii (a black out occurred while the wii was in standby mode). Unplug. Wait a few (5) minutes. Replug in and it should work. Fingers crossed - our wii is fine and we are now going to invest in a power surge protector too.
