What is a good free site to download music from, and is it safe enough to do so if I have good anti virus protection?

There is basically no free music out there from popular bands. Sites like music.downloads.com have free music from small bands. I really only listen to music on my computer, and so I use last.fm and pandora, two music services where one types in a genre, song, or artist and the service generates a radio station based on those styles and plays similar songs.
