I didn't realize that you would be prevented from owning a gun for a misdemeanor. I know convicted felons are prevented from handgun ownership here in SC. What would prevent you from owning a shotgun for the protection of your family??

You are banned from gun ownership, but not because of the Brady Bill. The Gun Control Act of 1968 bans gun ownership for those convicted of a federal crime with punishment of more than 1 year in jail (which is a felony), or a state laws with punishment of more than two years in jail. You will note that most states define a felony as a crime punishable by more than a year, which means some state felonies will not preclude you from owning a gun under federal law. However, the Gun Control Act also prohibits gun ownership to those convicted of domestic violence, even if it is only a misdemeanor. The Brady Bill modified the Gun Control Act by adding enforcement mechanisms, but the original act is what precludes you from owning a gun.
