  • Find a certain stern command that your dog responds to, and use that whenever it happens again or dial this number, 1-800-Cesarmilan.
  • I would prefer to say "OFF!" and then push them off...Shock collars are a bit cruel in my opinion. Eventually btw, they'll learn to either stay off the couch, or get off when you say off.
  • I find shock collars to be relatively USELESS for actually training a dog to do a CORRECT behavior. They cause FEAR, they do not provide direction for what you DO WANT THE DOG TO DO. Make sure your dog (s) have a comfortable "bed" on the floor in the room you are hanging out in with the dog. Buy and cut up some human grade beef or turkey jerky (plain is best), into tiny bits, a small zip lock bag is easy to keep it in. Start by being on the floor with the dog, sitting next to THE DOG'S SPECIAL SPOT...(THE BED). Call the dog to come and lay down...(assuming you have already trained the dog to come...and to Lay Down on command...if not..then you need to back up and start training your basic good behaviors..adding THIS specific training to the rest!) Once the dog lays down on his/her bed...PRAISE AND REWARD the dog with several (a "jack pot") of your beef jerky. Sit there and pet (rub/massage) the dog as it lays comfortably and relaxed on it's bed. Remember too if you are also working on basic training work...add GO TO...and BACK UP to your list of commands. Carry on as you started for two to three days/nights, until the dog seems quite clear on "come lay on your bed." (or whatever words you choose to use here). Next, move yourself to a piece of furniture off of the floor...AFTER having asked the dog to "go lay on your bed/or/come lay on your bed. (See where STAY HERE can be a useful command?) You can also buy a KONG (or two...I prefer to have a couple of these wonderful training toys available!), STUFF YOUR KONG...with a mix of nonfat yogurt, or nonfat cottage cheese AND (pick and choose from...) a teaspoon of Apple sauce, some canned dog food, some of your bits of jerky, some dry kibble, a bit of other meat, some plain canned pumpkin....different dogs like different things...most dogs love plain pumpkin, a few do not! Freeze the Kong over night. The dog gets the frozen stuffed Kong when you want the dog to ideally stay in one spot...his/her bed or a crate for a good while... If the dog jumps up on the furniture and you are sitting them...tell them...NO...go lay on your bed..reward and praise them for doing it.... If the dog is still hopping up when you are NOT home...you'll probably need to take steps to insure that the dog does not have access to the room with the furniture in it that it wants to lay on. If the dog has made laying on furniture a habit, when you are not home...then it's pretty tough to get them to understand that they cannot do this EVER...So...it comes down to setting the dog up to be successful in NOT DOING the behavior, by restricting their access to the location in which they do the behavior. Crates and Baby Gates (you can also stack two gates one on top of the other...for those great jumping pups!)
