In Buddhism for example, one of the major beliefs in the religion is that "all things are impermanent, and without a self", so if you achieve enlightenment, you will cease to exist, and attain an indescribable bliss-like state called "Nirvana". In the Abrahamic religions, the soul is the complete center of a person's life, it is everlasting, and it is only the body which is considered transient. So at the end, after judgment, the soul will continue on, either in paradise or in hell.
