I saw a documentary on this a week or so ago and one significant fact that can be attributed to many disappearances is that it is an area unique in its weather system. There are many cross currents and very violent freak storms can blow up in seconds. Couple this with the fact that many boats didn't use to have GPS and they would not have seen the storms coming or had a chance to react to them. There have been less disappearances in latter years due to the advancement in tracking the weather and the equipment carried by individual vessels and planes.
