This varies widely by jurisdiction. Many courts in America allow one continuance as a matter of right, but then an unlimited amount for good cause (which is up to the discretion of the judge). Other courts only allow a continuance for cause. I do not know of any court that does not allow any continuances, but it is certainly possible that such a court exists.
