let me start out by saying, been there ...

i'm not fond of many country / western songs, but, i found that it came in handy once many years ago.

after asking my heavy metal neighbors to turn down the volume on their stereo at least 30 times in the last month, i finally took matters into my own hands.

i moved my stereo next to the wall where the most heavy metal seemed to be protruding through... i changed the channel to country / western ... i then turned the volume to full and sat there for 30 minutes.

while we all got depressed listening to that music for 30 whole minutes, i never again had to listen to their heavy metal ..

Egg Cartons are a good idea for sound proofing. (they are also cheap!) but if it was me i would put on the most annoying tv show/CD you can find. and then blast them out. If they come to complain just say that you could not hear your music over their TV.

A personal favourite is to play an informical or christmas carols on the radio. Extra points if it is in july :)

A cheaper solution will be to apply QuietGlue to your existing surface (as it is), screw the new drywall over top, and fill in the seams with acoustical caulk, spackle, and repaint.
