Have your fuel system checked. I recently had to have my fuel pump replaced. I was having the same sort of problem with losing acceleration and power very suddenly when driving.

While Zebulon may be correct,(and probably is) replacing the fuel pump is very expensive if you pay to have it done. A pain in the ass if you do it yourself. You have to remove your fuel tank to do this, a very difficult job if you try it on your driveway. Nothing that I would attempt on my own (I'm an ASE mechanic). I would first remove the fuel filter and see if I could blow through it (blow from tank side-to-engine side) If air flows freely, then Zebulon is probably correct. If you have any resistance at all ie; your cheeks puff up because you cant get anything to come out the other end,.......your filter is clogged. A new filter is relatively cheap compared to replacing a pump.(some shops will diagnose a bad fuel pump, replace it, and then put on a fuel pump anyway) I would suggest that you purchase a new filter anyway. (No reason to put an old one back on, even if it is flowing) I do it for a living and usually pay about $7 for a filter on average. You can get one at any part store for $10-$20. How to do it? step-by-step? Crawl under your car(driver's side) between front and back doors. Between the fuel tank and engine, along the inside frame rail, you'll see a silver cylinder with metal lines going in and out. (this is why I say to go ahead and buy a new one, real easy to figure out by visual what you need to remove) Watch your eyes when you loosen one end of the filter, once you "break" the line , fuel will run on the ground. Try to have a tub of some kind to catch what drips. (I MUST ADD, NO SMOKING AND NO OPEN FLAMES WHILE YOU DO THIS!) Install the new filter, make sure "o" rings are on the line before tightening. Make sure fittings are tight, but don't "overtourque" Crawl out from under the car and remove tools and fuel bucket. Start car. It will take awhile because all of the fuel has drained from the lines. I usually turn the key on and wait about 10 seconds. "pumping the gas pedal" might flood the engine. WAIT BEFORE YOU USE THE ACCELERATOR. See what happens. Given that your car is 15 years old,.....you many need some other repairs or maintenance. any questions? phinswin@ureach.com
