  • Petrol is at $1.70 a liter. The Aus dollar to the US dollar is at about 90c. Every sight in Australia is about 500k's away from each other. You have the ferris wheel in Melb, the bridge in Sydney, Parliament House in Canberra, Ularu in the middle of nowhere, the big Pineapple and Big Banana in Queensland somewhere, the four theme parks near the Gold Coast in Queensland - that's about 5000 k's right there, and I've probably missed everything you actually wanted to see. That's just seeing the sights, though. At the moment, Melbourne and Sydney are over-populated, you're not going to find a place in the two decent cities of Aus. The cost of living is trough the roof, unemployment is high, and we just got new tax on alcohol, too, raising prices by about 50%. It's expensive here. If you don't want to spend all your retirement money within 6 months, I suggest you go somewhere else, to be honest. We really suck at the moment.
  • I spent 3+ weeks there in 2007 and just returned from 4 weeks last month and while our USD is 10% greater than the AUD, the cost of living has risen dramatically in one year making being an ex-pat more difficult financially. You could consider New Zealand where the dollar stretches a little further.
