having done a bit of research, i found out that they believe using modern technology makes them part of the world that the bible says they should not be a part of. while it is true the bible says that a christian cannot be part of the world, the bible is referring to not being part of its immoral practices. it was not referring to not using the technology of the time. i actually visited an amish community and the guide told the group i was with that in the amish community there is and is prevalent the practice of incest.

They don't reject all technology or convenience. They look at it and ask the question "will this enhance or disrupt community." They are all about community.
