Mosquitos eat plant nectar. Females need protein to propagate. Males don't have the apparatus to drink blood.

The female has longer sucking apparatus than the male and at some point in their history--like many other creatures--discovered vampirism. A mosquito after a blood meal will typically lay about 200 eggs, but if she is only able to get plant sap may only lay 10. They can go many generations without needing blood, I don't know how many.
