  • The most common problem is a fan that's failing, or a wire which is hitting the fan blades. There are usually 2 fans: one for the power supply and one for the CPU. If one of these fails completely, its dangerous -- the computer can overheat and basically burn up. Another possibility is a failing hard drive (the bearings can make noise). Also bad. Get it checked.
  • You have a failing fan if the sound goes away after you shut off and turn back on. I have one right now thats doing the same thing. If you are knowledgable, I would suggest opening up your case and cleaning out all the dust on the fans. Most of the time my fans start making noise when there is too much dust built up on the fan blades. It unbalances the blades causing the whirring noise. Also the fans don't last forever and after a few years need to be replaced. If you need a new fan a good place to start is either http://computers.listings.ebay.com/Fans-Heatsinks-Cooling_Case-Fans-and-Coolers_W0QQfromZR4QQsacatZ80145QQsocmdZListingItemList or other sites that sell computer parts such as http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=573&name=Case-Fans. Replacements can be as cheap as under $5.00
  • you're lucky. my graphics card did the same because it had a fan built into it, so i did a little bit of surgery and amputated the fan. and all of a sudden, its all ok. 3 weeks later, the main fan on the power unit starts. f***. if youre desperate, remove the fan and put a 9" desk fan beside it. worked for me!
  • As others have said, its most likely the fan, but it could also be that you have a CD/DVD in the CD/DVD drive and it is spinning up, and the drive is not secured properly with all the screws (makes an awful sound) also (and you don't want this) the hard drive can start to make a noise shorlty before they fail. Hope its not this. Good Luck
  • I have the exact same problem right now. It makes a somewhat loud buzzing until I turn it off (it gets gradually louder as the computer is on). Either replace the fan or hard drive (I asked this question a while back before).
  • It should be the hard drive ready to say byebye.Solution? Back up your files and change the hard drive. Maybe the CPU or a ram problem.
  • strangely when i switch on the pc in morning it makes a buzzing sound then when i switch it off that time and restart then it doesnt produce any sound through out the day. today i called a enginer to my place he when it was on i suppose he stoped the fan with a pencil and then realased it and the sound stoped imidiately. please tell me what is the problem? and would the problem be solved now? he did that when pc was open and the sound was coming now no sound is coming

  • I have been in computing for 20 years and I think your problem is not IT related, but rather caused by your PC being haunted by a poltergeist! Throw the PC away now ... if it will let you!
  • The noise is coming from what seems to be the fan. As soon as i turn my laptop on, it starts making a horrible buzzing noise. I'vve recently taken it on a plane, and I'm starting to wonder if that may have caused it. However whenever i press down firmly on the casing of my laptop (keyboard side) at where the fan is, it stops, and as soon as i lift my hand off, it starts again. What would be the best course of action?
  • Clean the fan buy buying a can of pressurized air ($10 max), and blow te air into a side vent of the computer. this should clear dust etc. from the clogged fan so it can move about freely again. If that doesn't work you'll know something more serious is up.
  • It could be your harddrive just needs the screws tightening - might be just a vibration picked up by the chasis from the HD spinning.
  • My computer is doing that but only when I turn it on. after like a minute on, it stop completely but the comp still works fine. It does it again whenever I have it on for a long time. But I dont know should I worry?
  • My computer is making buzzing noise for one minute after switching it on. But after one minute it works fine. I replaced a new fan and even after replacement it again makes the same noise. What would be the problem? Can anybody help me pls.

  • Ok, My PC has been making a buzzing noise for a while now. I am knowledgeable in computing so I had no worries taking it apart. I recently dusted my computer so I know dust is not making the computer buzz. I took everything apart from RAM to CPU and motherboard, had a good look at them all, no dust, scratches or anything. After a while the computer does stop buzzing but then starts again. When I fannytap the case it stops and then buzzes again after a minute or so. It sounds like a Motorbike engine under my desk... Help please? Any solutions?
