It really depends on what makes your credit "fair". If it's too many revolving accounts (i.e. credit / store cards) then yes, closing some of them would help. If it's past due / missed credit payments or a bankruptcy, only the time will help. I would suggest getting a detailed credit report from the big 3 and showing it to your mortgage broker. They will tell you right away what you should be working on.

I disputed any card I did not recognize or remembered. Then I paid on time all my charged cards for 3 years (yes you heard me right). Then it was all good from there. I have good credit and more than I know what to do with. I should also say I have no bankrupcies. I did have a write off, but I got it dropped from my credit report luckily. Good luck! There is so much advice out there on this topic.
