Scissors have been around for over 1000 years. There is no one person known to have invented them. I am sure they were invented in various cultures at various times.

    EDIT: Wikipedia says this:

"Scissors were likely invented in 1500 BC in ancient Egypt[3]. These were likely shears with the joint at the far end[4]. Modern cross-bladed scissors were invented by Romans around AD 100.

An immense stride in perfecting scissors was taken in 1761 when one Robert Hinchliffe produced the first pair made of cast steel, hardened and polished. The forming of the bows was his greatest difficulty. Somehow he solved problems with the hole. A ready sale was found for his wares in London and other markets. He lived in Cheney Square, and was reputed to be the first person who put out a signboard proclaiming himself "fine scissor manufacturer".

In a part of Sweden (today Finland) an ironworks was started 1649 in the hamlet "Fiskars" between Helsingfors and Åbo (fi: Turku). In 1830 a new owner started the first cutlery works in Finland, now a part of Russia, making among others scissors with the trade mark FISKARS. In the sovereign Finland FISKARS Corporation introduced 1967 new methods in the manufacturing of scissors and in 1977 FISKARS built a scissors plant in the U.S.A. (Wausau, Wisconsin) ."

To TheAnswerer: Word to the wise, don't copy and paste your answers from other sites. When you post information from another site, you should credit that site. When you do not, it is called plaigarism. Plaigarism is frowned on at AB. Post your source. The New York Times (who owns the site your answer was copied and pasted from) also frowns on plaigarism. When you get information from another source, put it in your own words, then post a link to the site. In this particular case, it is not only plaigarism, it is copyright infringement. You may want to fix your answer post haste, along with any others you may have done this with. Just trying to help.

Hate to see you get booted out for this kind of thing.

P.S. I would have done this with an email rather than post it where everyone could see it, but you don't have yours posted.

Pinking shears (scissors) were first invented and patented in 1893 by Louise Austin, of Whatcom, Washington, "to facilitate pinking and scalloping and as a marked improvement over ordinary pinking irons and tools".
