  • They are not pressed at 45 or 33 rpm. The master disc is cut at those speeds, and a mold is made from it, from which the discs are pressed. Length of the recording, and size of the disc available, are the only two factors that matter when deciding which speed to use. The master discs are cut in a spiral. At 33 rpm, the cutting needle passes through the spiral groove at a slower speed than at 45 rpm, which means that 33 rpm will cut a longer track than a 45 rpm on the same size disc.
