AM radio should work at its best at night, if you're looking at long-distance reception. At night, Radio waves at the AM frequencies bounce between the Ionosphere and Earth, and are capable of going thousands of miles from the transmitter. Some stations (Texas, Louisiana) are listened to by truckers across the nation Sadly, during the day, the Sun's radiation forms a layer of ionosphere ("D" layer) that prevents this bouncing from happening. You'd be lucky to get 50 or so miles, then. If you're not hearing much at night, then check the radio. Perhaps you need to string a wire 10 or more feet long, to use as an antenna, if you have a terminal on the radio to accept it. If there's no jack, you'd have to check with an "expert" to see how to couple it to the internal loop antenna of the radio. Good luck!

What you got there is an am radio, if you want to do your listening at night you will need the PM radio.
