sounds like a bent crankshaft, or your main bearings have gone bad. Either one pretty much requires either an engine overhaul or replacement. Both are pricey propositions.

Motor oil is not going to stop this noise, unless the engine is completely out of oil. Two mechanics have given you two different opinions and this is really not good. First, how many miles on this engine? Second, i would seek a third opinion, by a mechanic at a Chrysler Auto Dealer. they know their engines best.

There's no way thicker oil is going to do anything but speed up your engine's death. You need to have whatever in the engine fixed. That's really a sign of a bad mechanic, any time they tell you to "use thicker oil". Your car is rated for a specific oil grade by the engines own designers/engineers, and that should not ever be changed. They're going to have to either rebuild or replace your engine, which I believe costs around $2000-$4000 depending on the car, and the mechanic.
