  • Chinchillas go through phases where they lose old hair and gain new hair. When a chinchilla has completed one of these phases it is said to be in prime.
  • Chinchillas also lose their hair as a natural defense mechanism, like when a predator tries to grab it. If there is a lot of stress in the environment you may even notice bald spots (worse case scenario). Chinchillas also sometimes pull out their own fur. Fur also gets caught on different parts of the cage, but that kind of works like shedding or what Wifenumber3 said.
