This demographic is very imprtant for the Republican Party. This group is already counted as the base for their support. If they start to lose this base, they will have to make it up somewhere else that would be more difficult. This may explain why Obama is trying to reach out to these people. Another reason is that Evangelical Christians are concentrated in the south. The southern strategy for presidential elections for Republicans have given them an automatic headstart in electoral votes because a solid south has a lot more electoral votes than the northeast that the Democratic Party counts as its base. With that said, I don't think the issue of religion will be the top issue for a significant amount of voters when it comes to the federal government. Most peoples' priorities tend to be heathcare, the wars, immigration, and especially the economy this year. These issues transcend religiosity. Also, I don't think there will be much of a fight for this demographic due to the pro-choice stance that Obama has. Obama is just trying to chip at some outlaying votes for undecided voters within this demographic.
