If you know what you are doing to can use almost any program. You could very easily sync with Winamp or Amarok, or, if you try really hard and your files are in mp3 format, you can even use Windows Media Player, but I wouldn't suggest it. When it comes down to it, you can format the device and just transfer the files manually, that's what I do and it always works for me.
Why bother with an alternate program to utilize your iPod? Go on line and DL whatever you need for the iPod you have and use it. There is not real benefit to using an alternate method.
there is no way, you have to have itunes in able to get the songs sync with the ipod. Does not mean you have to buy the songs from ITunes.
You can use an iTunes hack program called SharePod
