The front duck is the strongest duck, which helps to create a jet-stream effect for the other ducks. It is said to have a 37% increase in speed. The duck does not however, lead. The formation is simply automatically created, the ducks see no sense in flying in a random formation when they can make things faster for themselves.

it's the alpha duck ... or, at least, the strongest one. come to think of it, the front duck is usually carrying a print out from mapquest, so, knowing where to lead all the others might have something to do with it...

I believe ever so often they rotate the "front" one, but usually the strongest spends the most time at the apex.

The one who knows the way. Actually any duck that knows the route and is an older but strong duck rotates out in front. One duck cannot stay in the front for long, so the lead changes as needed.

I think it's like cyclists in a bunch.... The slipstream is created by the front guy, but they can't stay there forever so it will rotate.

They switch places along the way. btw, I'm pretty certain that DUCKS doesn't fly in a v-formation.. isn't that geese?
