it takes sound about five seconds to go a mile, so for every five seconds you count between lightning and thunder, the storm is one mile away. for example, if you count to 25, the storm is five miles away.

Yes, it's supposed to be a relatively accurate measure. You're basically measuring the speed of the light and sound traveling the same distance, taking the difference, and multiplying by the right factor.

That's about right....but hearing thunder is good reason to get out of a pool or off of a golf course, etc.

If you count 1 and 2 and 3, it's supposed to be a fairly acurater measure of how far away the storm is.
