My mom had polio as child in the 1930's, and she had a pronounced limp. I learned early on that I was not allowed to run away from her under any circumstances, and it probably saved my life a couple of times in bad traffic/street crossing situations. Other than that, it just made me more cognizant at an early age that some people were different from me, and I hope it still makes me more considerate of others.
