I remember a few years back there were bathing suits made of a fabric that allowed you to get a tan through the material and prevent tan lines. Therefore, clothing is not necessarily protection against the sun's rays as Merfish has already mentioned.

Depends on the type of cloth and how tightly the weave is. I've gotten a tan/burn through a shirt.

Yes it is possible if you use clothes made of synthetic materials thus the sun burns are quite bad as they concentrate the heat over your skin. Regards.
