Why did someone decide the White House should be white?

Probably was in style to paint a house white at the time is was built. Easier to keep the wood from rotting and an easy color to make. It wasn't called the white house until after it was built and people noted the color and called it "White House" for convinence.

The home was burned during the war of 1812 when the Britsh took control of Washington. When the Americans regained control they re built the home and used white wash paint to cover the soot on the parts of the home that were salvagable.
