It's hard because you are still human and you don't want to cause such pain to someone who doesn't deserve it at all. The are unaware and innocent, and feeling safe and secure in their trust in your being there for them. To break up with them means betraying their trust, and hurting someone who only has good feelings for you. It's hard to think of ourselves as capable of doing this to someone. That's why.

I suppose most people are really just waiting for someone "better" to come along. It's the epitome of selfishness, if you ask me.

Well, I have not had that experience. When I end a relationship I'm over that person..I got over him first and then ended it so I've never had that problem. Perhaps if you believe you've treated someone unfairly you may feel a bit of guilt...or if you were dishonest about something and led the person on when you had no intention of hanging around..then it would be hard I think to just move on. :)
