  • It's a simple qustion... there are civilain jobs in land based navy and army bases.... maybe there are some on board navy aircraft carriers... so that is why I asked because I'm curious
  • No. The only civilians I ever saw working on board my carrier were contractors and they were only on board while we were in port. They were not attached to the ship in any way; they worked for the shipyard. We sailors ran the stores, cut the hair, and did all of the things that civilians do ashore.
  • Yes, civilian aviation technical reps are always on the ship. During the 1980's we always had 5 or 6 on the USS Independence.
  • I was a member of a squadron assigned to a carrier in the late 80's. At that time we had civilian technical representatives aboard to help teach / repair new technologies. They were usually on board 3-4 months.
  • Occasionally contractors and "civilian contractors" do work on systems when a carrier is at sea, usually they are working on new ship systems , or updating older equipment - or even holding educational classes. Occasionally there are civilians doing news reporting or conducting medical studies or research..psycological studies are commonplace in this enviorment. All "visitors" are directly working under Navy rules and regs, but are not listed as "crew".
