I sucked at Scrabble too when I first played. I made up short, little words. The people who are really good at it probably has a lot of practice playing.

First, reading a lot helps in my opinion, that increases your vocabulary. Look for those bonus spaces; try to use rarer, more valuable letter tiles and strategically place them in such spaces. The longer words with less valuable letter tiles are not always the best option. Perform a quick calculation in your head of the possible outcomes (total points) of your move. Sometimes a shorter word might give you more points. I like to use the "S" for plurals strategically as well by placing it at the end of a valuable word and adding a plural word of my own. (2 words for 1) Suffixes also make for easy points if used judiciously by adding them to the end of verbs, for example -ed, -ing.

You might try to use letters that have more points like x,y and z. When you have some time, look thru a dictionary for some words that have those letters in them and keep them in mind for playing.

I've found a book called "Everything Scrabble" to be invaluable. It has lists of high-scoring words, and many tips on strategy, including how to make it easier to score 50-point bonuses for using all 7 of your tiles in one play. Please note that this answer is not spam -- I have no financial interest in the sale of the book, and I don't know the authors. I find it necessary to mention this because some people are suspicious when a specific product is cited. Happy Scrabbling!

Some good ideas are answers to your question. I play some with my wife and we both read a lot. However, sometimes we disagree on what is a word and what is not. We have re named the game Squabble when that happens.
