  • It would be of great help to have two separate checking accounts. One for bills only and the other for other needs and obstacles. The "bills only" account should be set up to pay debts automatically on as many items as you can with checks only and no debit card. While the other account will be the only one you will have a debit card to. Each time you get a pay check put it in the appropriate account and switch over the amount remaining to your non-bills account.
  • You could put yourself on a regular salary by depositing all your earnings into bank account "A" which has a regular transfer to account "B" every 2 weeks. If you don't touch account "A" and live modestly out of account "B," you'll also be building a nice savings cushion in the process.
