  • They can give away your room
  • No, checkin time means the eariest you can check in. That is the time you start paying for the room. If the hotel is overbooked, then the reservations are held on a first come first serve basis. But with the frequency of business travel, it's usually not a problem. I've checked in at midnight that night (9 hours after checkin time) and not had a problem.
  • If you have made a deposit with a credit card and you don't cancel within 24 hours of checkin time, they have the right to charge the full amount and re-book your room if you no-show....but if you call while en route if you are going to be late or after midnite, they will still charge your room but not re-book it.
  • I've never had a problem with check-in times. In fact, in most cases, I think they give you that time because that's the EARLIEST you can check in, so they can make sure your room has been cleaned and prepared for your stay. I mean, yeah, if you're going to be like 6 hours late, you may want to call them and let them know you're still planning on taking the room, or they may (depending on the hotel's individual policy) give it away to someone else, but I think that's pretty unlikely.
  • Some places have what is called a 4:00 PM hold, that is your reservation is guartanteed until 4:00 PM and then you are not responsible for it. Some require a 24 hour cancellation policy - so if you do not show up then you will be charged full room and tax charges. Some use a deposit policy where you have to put down an amount in advance to reserve your room. In any case it is always a good practice to call if you will be arriving later than expected.
