Your questions seem a little jumbled and vague to me, but I'll try to answer them as best I can. First, if your game has online play, then it will have its own options within the game itself for accessing the internet connection. Often there are some confirmation messages (like "Are you sure you want to connect to the internet? Yes or No") before you actually connect. Each game manual will also tell you how to find players online for their respective games. The Wii itself has an internet connection setup menu, where you can configure your system to connect as it needs to. To access the menu, turn on your Wii and choose the round button in the lower left corner of the screen that says "Wii options" when you hover over it. Next, choose "Wii Settings", then scroll right to find the bar that says "Internet". On the next screen, choose the bar labeled "Connection Settings". Unfortunately, there are so many different network types and conditions, that I can't give you specifics to set it up for yours. What I usually do is follow on-screen instructions until I either reach the end "success" confirmation, or hit an error message. With each error, I hop back on my computer and search for that specific error message to find a solution. As for the internet connection being necessary to challenge other people, that depends on where the people are. If you want to play with people that are in the same room as you, it's a safe bet that you don't need an internet connection, you just need a controller for each player. If you want to play with people who aren't near you -- for example, a friend that lives down the street -- each of you will have to have a Wii, your internet connections set up and working, and the same game that has online play. I really hope this helps. If you're still confused or run into trouble, comment with more details and I'll try to help you through.
