  • Displacement of a boat is the amount of water it displaces in weight. Thus a 10 pound boat would displace 10 pounds of water. Put another way, if you had a container that was filled to the brim with water and had a way of capturing any overflow of water, the weight of the small model boat placed on this water would be same weight of the water that poured over the edge. Similarly, if you had an object that did not float and placed it in the water. The amount of water that would go over the edge would be the same volume as the object. So you have to know what the boat is going to weigh. 12-26-08 I guess I could tell you that the weight of water is 62.4 lb/ft^3 or 8.13 lbs per gallon assuming that the temperature of this water is about 70 degrees F.
