A backhanded slap is a bit worse to me. Personally, I think a backhanded one means that you just want to get them out of your way like a piece of trash, while a open handed one probably is more obvious and more meaningful. Slaps should always be pregnant with meaning!

A backhanded slap can carry a lot more force behind it than can a slap with the palm, since the person making the backhanded slap can turn further to his left and then use the additional distance to build up the speed of his arm and hand. The palm slap is generally limited by how far the shoulder can rotate to the rear.
