Sorry for the misinformation -- it is the FCC not the FTC. We have too many TLA's! (three letter acronyms) And the ruling has more to do with those who cannot afford it and need "coupons" from the govt. Interesting question. It might have an effect based on the number of consumers it confuses. The gov't coupon program has pretty explicitly stated you only need one of these DTV converter boxes if you are using an antenna, not on cable, and not using a satellite dish, and your TV doesn't have an ATSC tuner already. But people have to read that and understand it, and ignore the misinformation they get from salesman at Radio Shack ;-) The world of TV is pretty complicated these days, and I've seen how easy it is to be confused by it. It used to be the case that the most complex part was aiming the antenna, now it's a myriad of converters, players, decoders, and monitors (with 5 different video standards), etc. It's amazing people get this stuff to work at all!
