april 23,1635 boston latin school
The first public school in America was established by Puritan settlers in 1635 in the home of Schoolmaster Philemon Pormont and was later moved to School Street in Boston, Mass.
The day was July 4, 1848 and the Lockport Union School, Lockport, NY, was opened. It was a "first" in local education, and as it turns out, perhaps a worldwide first. Before the opening of this public high school, built at a cost to the taxpayers of $15,000, those who wished education beyond the elementary level had to pay to attend a private school. It is now believed to be the first public high school in the United States, if not the world.
Although it was public school, the Union School still charged a very modest tuition. $2 per semester for junior residents and $3 per semester for senior residents. Non-residents were charged $3 (juniors) and $4 (seniors) per semester. There were also some extra charges for certain subjects: Latin and Greek $1 each; French $1.50; German, Italian, and Spanish $2.50; Drawing or Painting $2; Bookkeeping 50-cents; Music $8; and Piano $2
Everything later became free tuition.

BOSTON, April 27 (AP) — One wall at English High School here holds old black-and-white photographs of young white men in high starched collars and V-neck varsity sweaters. Another wall is covered with a mural spray painted in graffiti like an inner-city overpass.
English High was founded in 1821 as the United States’ first public high school, and its graduates include J. P. Morgan and Maj. Gen. Matthew Ridgway from the Korean War. Today, its student body, dressed mostly in baggy jeans and do-rags, is one of the most diverse in the city, and one of its lowest-performing, too.
just chased this down on the net--hope this helps--smile and enjoy the night

Yes, The first public school in America was established by Puritan settlers in 1635 in the home of Schoolmaster Philemon Pormont. But he did not teach humanics as some weird reinvet history websites say. That is a 20th century word. No meaning in 1635...Did he teach Latin...yes...from the bible. He was teaching the word of God so people have a general understanding of right and wrong.Today we sacifice truth for a weak tolorance socity!
