How can my mom claim me as a dependant at age 28? I live on my own, pay my own bills, and get my own money for school? I am not getting my stimulas check because of this. i am very upset about it. Please help

I think if you make less than a certain amount of money a year, she can do that. My mother tried to do the same but luckily, I earned too much for her to claim me. My mother is so cheap, she's trying to get free money wherever she can and it's sad. She actually got audited by the IRS a few times already for trying to claim me on past tax returns. To be sure though, ask an income tax preparer what the regulations are regarding you mother claiming you.

as of 2007 IRS laws.. I person can be claimed as a dependent as long as the have lived more than 50 percent of the year in the household and you have provided more than 50 percent of his living expenses. (room and board) Figure rent to be equal to the average 1 bedroom apartment.

She can't legally do that, she would have to be supporting you to be able to claim you. If you raise hell about your stimulus check, it could mean jail time for your mom.

she must have been doing it for the past twenty eight years. habits are hard to stop. do you file your individual income tax? if not, then no one will be the wiser.
