  • My snkaes do not come out until about midnight & go back in around 4 am. He may be out in the open because he is getting used to his surroundings. Put a water bowl in there big enough for him to soak in & maybe a vine that you can buy at the pet store. DO NOT get one from outside because it may have parasites on it that you don't want to have on the snake. Red tails usually like to stay out in the open. Pythons are usually more of the hide box types. Try feeding him during the day (around 3 or 4 pm) & the next day, you'll probably see him hanging out in the cage. Also make sure that you take him out once in a while to get used to you. He needs to know he has a caretaker because he may feel like he has to "hunt" when he is actually captive.
  • The best thing you can do for him would be to give him a week-long adjustment period. Don't poke around his cage, don't handle him unless absolutely necessary. DON'T offer him any food until after this period. He probably won't eat anyway and if he does he may regurgitate it (not good for him AT ALL). Boas are generally inquisitive snakes and he's probably just scoping out his new digs. Just make sure his temperatures in his cage are proper and that he has a cool end and a "hot spot" so he can thermoregulate... and plenty of clean water (but not enough to drown. yes, some boas drown from time to time). I think I've only had 2 boas ever actually hang out in their hides after I first put them in their cages after getting them. Most of the explored, hung out in their waterbowl for a little bit (rehydrating after being shipped) or just sat 'out in the open' for a little while before settling into normal behaviors. Just keep an eye on him and disturb him as little as possible. If it's been more than a week of abnormal behaviors, call a vet.
