The most common spelling is Magdalene, but Magdalen is acceptable, although more archaic. In French, she is Marie Magdalene (The name Madeleine comes from this), in Italian Maria Maddalena and German Maria/Marie Magdalen. The name means Mary of Magdala, which was a small town in Israel, on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Trivia: the word MAUDLIN in english, which means weepily sentimental, is derived from the name Magdalen, specifically the biblical Mary Magdalen who in religious art is traditionally depicted as weeping.
